One of the top priorities for candidates in 2021 was finding a job or changing their current one. Thus, last year, Romanians applied more than 12.6 million times for jobs on the recruitment platform eJobs.ro. The number of applications submitted is 34% higher than in 2019 and 5% higher than in 2020, with 2021 also being the year with the most applications in the last decade for eJobs Romania.

At the same time, the job offer was also very close to the market level in the pre-pandemic period: almost 365,000 new jobs were advertised in 2021, only 5% less than in 2019 and 22% more than in 2020.

“While 2020 saw candidates forced to make career changes as a result of layoffs and transformations imposed by the pandemic, 2021 saw a strong sense that changing jobs became a choice again and ceased to be a constraint as in the previous year. We saw more courageous candidates than ever before, and this was reflected in record application numbers: 12.6 million, the most in the last ten years,” says Bogdan Badea, CEO of eJobs Romania, the leading recruitment marketplace.

The fields that attracted the most CVs in 2021 were Retail, Services, Call-center/BPO, IT/Telecom, and Financial/Banking. On the other hand, the fewest applications came from employers working in the Textile Industry, Insurance, Education/Training, and Sport & Wellness.

Most candidates eager for a career change came from the Capital, which attracted more than a quarter of applications. At the same time, large university centers such as Cluj, Timișoara, and Brașov came in strongly behind, accounting for almost 19% of all applications. Candidates’ interest in jobs abroad also remains at an all-time low. Last year, only 1.3% of all applications were for positions available abroad.

The most active applicants in 2021 were those aged 25-35. They were followed by those aged 18-24 and 36-45. Still, the greatest reluctance to change is seen in the 45+ category, with these candidates also being among the hardest to employ in the labor market, according to a survey conducted by eJobs in 2021.

“Certainly, 2022 will be a year in which the labour market stabilises even more. We will return to a fierce battle for talent – in many fields this is already happening – and turnover in teams will increase. There will also be even more pressure on salary budgets and we will see salary increases in most areas. At the same time, candidates will be more selective about job offers and will only embrace change if the job opportunity ticks all the boxes for them. Companies that continue to invest in their employer brand and use it to their advantage will emerge winners in the battle for the best talent,” says Bogdan Badea.
