Volkswagen has unveiled the coupe version of its ID.4 electric SUV, called the ID.5.The new model comes with rear and all-wheel drive, but exclusively with the large 77 kWh battery.

What’s new are some figures, including those on the powertrain. The ID.5 is identical to the ID.4 in length (4.58 meters), wheelbase (2.77 meters) and width (1.85 meters), but at 1.61 meters the coupe SUV is three centimeters flatter.

The ID.5 is offered exclusively with the “Pro” battery, i.e. 77 kWh net, and combines the large battery with the 150 kW motor in the rear and, as an all-wheel drive vehicle, an additional asynchronous motor on the front axle.

There is also a charging innovation: the power does not increase to 170 kW as rumored, even though prototypes have been photographed at charging stations with 169 kW on display. VW has confirmed a maximum power output of 135 kW instead of 125 kW. According to WLTP figures, the recharge range would be up to 390 kilometers.

In addition, the ID.5 comes with the new ID.3.0 software, which will be installed on existing vehicles via an OTA update. Among other things, this should improve voice control and, above all, make it faster. The update also includes other features: Travel Assist is now able to change lanes. Park Assistant Plus has a memory function. This means the ID.5 can always park in the same position in the home garage after a single handover.

VW has not yet announced pricing for the ID.5 and ID.5 GTX, which will go on pre-sale at the end of November. Deliveries of the Zwickau-built coupe SUV are scheduled to begin in spring 2022.
