Electric vehicle registrations in 2021 have surpassed those achieved from 2011 to 2019 inclusively, and by the end of the year will reach a total of more than 10,000 units registered in Romania, data centralized by LEKTRI.CO, a company specializing in electric vehicle charging solutions, shows. October is also the best month of the year, with more than 780 new registrations.
According to the index, between January and October 2021, 3,018 new electric vehicles were registered, exceeding the total registrations from 2011 to 2019 inclusively. Currently, there are 9,070 electric vehicles in Romania, and by the end of the year, specialists expect the threshold of 10,000 units to be exceeded.
In the first 10 months, there was also a 52% increase compared to the same period last year, with major increases (+70%) being recorded in March, April, August, and October. At the same time, October is also the best month of the year, with 783 new registrations (of which 17 are LCVs), as well as the best month overall, being surpassed only by December 2020, with only four units.

Dacia Spring, top registrations in October
Dacia Spring is the electric model with the most registrations in October 2021 – 277 units. The Romanian model had another 65 registrations in June, which puts it on top of the list of electric vehicles registered this year, with 342 units.
October is also the month when the Tesla Model 3 made its mark, with 64 registrations (the highest monthly number for a Tesla model), along with the Hyundai Kona with 56 units, the VW ID 3 with 53, and the Renault Zoe and VW E-UP with 48 each. New entrants are the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – 4 units and the Tesla Model Y – 2 units.
The high-end segment totaled 37 new registrations in October: 10 Mercedes-Benz (7 EQC 400 4Matic and 3 EQV), 7 Porsche Taycan (of which 5 are 4S), 7 BMW IX3, 6 Ford Mustang Mach-E, 5 Audi E-Tron, and 2 Jaguar I-Pace.
Renault Zoe is the leader
Overall, among the 9,070 electric cars in Romania, the French Renault Zoe is the leader with 1,730 units (19% of the BEV market in Romania). It is worth mentioning that, with only two months of registrations to its credit, Dacia Spring has already become the leader for the year, which means that in the medium term it could become a competitor to Zoe in the overall ranking.
In terms of charging infrastructure, if we consider only public chargers without restrictions, the most used are CCS/CHAdeMO fast chargers and Type 2 fast chargers. According to the Plugshare portal, there are currently 1,924 public chargers of these types, of which 362 are CCS/CHAdeMO and Type2 we have 1,562. At the same time, the number of public charging locations has reached 951.
