Non-resident tourists arriving in Romania spent 1.432 billion lei in the first nine months of this year, while business visitors spent 791.5 million lei, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics, quoted by Agerpres.
Business (including participation in congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions) was the main reason for the stay spent by 51.5% of non-resident tourists arriving in Romania between 1 January and 30 September 2021, their expenditure accounting for 55.3% of total expenditure.
The largest share of total business expenditure was for accommodation (49%), with accommodation with breakfast included being the most preferred (90% of total accommodation expenditure). Spending in restaurants and bars accounted for 18.5% of the total and shopping for 15.1%. Of the total shopping expenditure, 48.3% was spent on food and drink and 29.8% on gifts and souvenirs. Expenditure on car rental accounted for 64.9% of total expenditure on transport, and expenditure on access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos, arcades accounted for 41.2% of total expenditure on recreation.
The second most important reason for non-residents’ stay in Romania was private trips (48.5% of the total number of non-resident tourists), among which holiday trips (60% of the total private trips).
Spending by non-resident tourists arriving in Romania in the first nine months for private purposes accounted for 44.7% of total expenditure, i.e. 640.7 million lei. The largest share was spent on accommodation (46.5%), of which accommodation including breakfast had the main share (83.2%). Spending in bars and restaurants accounted for 16.7% of the total personal expenditure, while shopping accounted for 16.1%. Expenditure on car rental accounted for 57.1% of total expenditure on transport, and expenditure on access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos, arcades accounted for 50.2% of total expenditure on recreation.
Of all non-residents arriving in Romania, 39.4% used travel agencies and 38.2% organised their stay on their own. The rest of the stays had another organiser (trade unions etc.) – 17.2%, as well as the travel agency, one part and the non-resident tourist the other part, 5.2%.
The main means of transport used by non-resident tourists to arrive in Romania was by air (74.8% of the total number of tourists). Own cars accounted for 18.1%, followed by coaches and buses with 4.5% and other means (train, river boats, rented cars, motorbikes, etc.) 2.6%.
The number of non-resident tourists staying in private accommodation (apartments and rooms for rent) during the period was 19,700, their expenditure in Romania being 13.6 million lei. Of the total expenditure incurred in Romania by non-resident tourists staying in private accommodation establishments, expenditure on accommodation (30%), expenditure in bars and restaurants (26.7%), expenditure on transport (21.8%) and expenditure on the purchase of products for personal use (12.2%) stand out.
Of the total number of non-resident tourists staying in private accommodation, 83.5% had a private purpose for their trip and 16.5% a business purpose. Of the private trips, holiday trips (70.9%) and business trips (82.3%) accounted for a higher share of private trips.
