Energy Ministry promises national hydrogen strategy within a year

The Ministry of Energy has set itself the goal of achieving the national hydrogen strategy within a year, said Tudor Toncea, representative of the Energy Policy, Green Deal, Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Directorate of the Ministry of Energy, quoted by Agerpres.

He attended the Romanian International Gas Conference, organized by the Romanian Oil and Gas Federation and the Energy Policy Group.

“Our objective is to finalize this strategy within a year. The realization of the strategy will be financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and we are thinking of the first quarter of 2023 as the end point. We will collect data from the Romanian market to help us realize this strategy,” Toncea said.

Last month, Dan Dragan, secretary of state at the ministry, said the institution had started work on the national hydrogen strategy and planned to draft legislation for the use of the fuel by 2023.

“Our renewables target is currently 30.7% and is due to be reviewed, with the National Integrated Energy and Climate Change Plan, which in 2022 will enter a thorough review process. With the review of the plan, hydrogen will take on an important, priority role, a key role that will lead us as a country to reach the Green Deal targets,” said Dragan.

There will also be a focus on digitalizing networks and storage capacity.

“This upgrade will make it possible to integrate renewable energy resources on a large scale by providing storage facilities, and a solution to the variations generated by these intermittent sources will be green hydrogen production capacities, based on renewable sources, as well as connecting with more remote consumption centers, especially industrial ones,” the ministerial official claimed.

Romania supports gas as a transitional element, to enable the integration of new renewable capacity, which in turn can be used for hydrogen production.

“In the PNRR we have an investment that refers to the construction of almost 2,000 kilometers of new gas distribution network to be prepared for hydrogen injection, in a proportion of 20% by 2026, to be used 100% with hydrogen by 2030”, added the Secretary of State.
